Configuring: Recommended FTP client, FileZilla - connecting and uploading

Answer/Solution

FatCow recommends FileZilla as the FTP client application. Use this application to upload or download multiple files quickly and easily to/from your site. We also recommend that you use secure FTP, or SFTP  rather than regular FTP. To configure FileZilla with SFTP, click here.

To download FileZilla:

  1. Connect to: http://filezilla-project.org/
  2. Download the client application

To connect using FTP:

  1. Start FileZilla
  2. In the top bar, enter the following settings (you can find these on your FTP settings page):

    • Host: ftp.PrimaryDomain
where PrimaryDomain is a domain in your hosting account
      example:
      ftp.CookiesByMary.info

    • Username: the username as listed on the FTP settings page, typically your hosting account username

    • Password: your hosting account password

    • Port: leave blank

  3. Click QuickConnect. The connection status is listed in the window directly below the login bar. Once the connection is established, the right and left panes are populated.
    • Left pane - local site - the file structure of your computer
    • Right pane - remote site  - the file structure of your site

  4. To upload files or folders to your site, drag the files or folders from the left pane to the right pane (from local site to remote site)
  5. To download files or folders from your site, drag the files or folders from the right pane to the left pane (from remote site to local site)
